My Cute, Innocent Wan

Cute conversation I had with my Wan (nenek) this morning on the phone.

Me: Wan, cer wan bagi nana nama ubat Wan

Wan: Wan tak reti sebut lah. Wan eja ya sayang?

Me: Aah, boleh-boleh.

Wan: D-I-A-M-I-C-R-O-N

Me: Oh, okay(Sambil salin). Okay lagi?

Wan: U-N-T-U-K

Me: Eh, yang tu bukan nama ubat, Wan.

Wan: oh. Yang ni yang ni. K-E-G-U-N-A-

Me: Eh tu pun bukan.

Wan: Tak habis lagi ni. A-A-N.

Me: Okay.

Wan: Banyak betul lah nama ubat ni. Pening Wan eja. Nanti Wan pergi kolumpo (Read: Kuala Lumpur), wan suruh cikdah tangkap gambar.

Me: Haa, ye lah wan. Bagus jugak tu. Penat lak wan nak eja.

Humble hebat people

Just realized that I was in the same group with the developer of Teachmeanatomy website during my Psychiatry block tutorials. He was so humble. Tak pernah terpikir he is that person from the year above who designed and managed that much useful website. Banyak sangat jumpa orang hebat yang humble. Nak jadi hebat dan humble juga :(
Diri ini.
dah lah tak humble.
hebat lagi lah tak.

I guess, the more you have, the less insecure you are, hence you don't feel the need to broadcast or tell the world of your contributions. Salute sama orang hebat yang humble.

So if you feel like bragging,
tell yourself
"why you so insecure haaa?"
Mesti hang tak cukup hebat lagi.

So lets be like those humble hebat people. Mix with everyone. Yet, maximize your contributions.

Bak kata pepatah melayu,

Haish. Kagum.

Bila nenek atuk bercerita

Setiap kali nak pergi ambil history daripada pesakit daripada ward, terus saya mindset kan diri.
"Okay Nana, you have ten minutes to take history. Ask what you need to ask"

Tapi selalunya saya end up berada di tepi patient selama sekurang-kurangnya 30 minit.

Ya saya tahu.

Saya patutnya mencelah bila pesakit mula bercakap tentang cucu cicit, kisah krismas lepas atau sejarah silamnya yang tak berkaitan.

But how can I have the heart to do that,
when in front of me is a lovely patient who has been living on her own for 20 years.

How can I have the heart to do that,
when in front of me is an old lady yang bersinar-sinar matanya bercerita tentang betapa rindunya dia pada evening walk with her late husband. Sambil tersenyum, dia memberitahu saya,

"We would just be enjoying the scenery and walked with no specific destination in mind"

How can I have the heart to do that,
when in front of me is a 94 year old lady who is telling me about her father whom she was really proud of.

This precious moment as medical student.
Bila kamu ada peluang,
dan kamu punya banyak masa.
Bila kamu belum ada accountability in their management,
Lantik lah diri sebagai pendengar.
At least, sekali sekala.

The Paradox

"One who stays up by night for some need is in fact at rest
One who spends his money in a good cause is in fact gaining it"
-quoted from Abu Hilal al-Askari-

in "The Value of Time", invaluable book by Shaykh Abd Fattah Abu Ghuddah

Even Step One comes from Him

Hari ni saya pergi ward for elderly. Lots of demented patients. And there is this one patient who is very sexually uninhibited. She kept trying to touch the consultant's private area while laughing all along.

Saya somehow bayangkan macam mana agak nya patient ni waktu muda. Dia mesti macam kita. Pernah Tahu apa batas. It's only her dementia that has caused her to lose her wisdom and awareness.

Tapi sebenarnya the major part of the input memang from Allah.

Kita perlu usaha. But all the praise goes to Allah

Witnesses

Remember that only judges, historians, and scientists are trained as impartial observers of phenomena, and even they are rarely completely objective

As that close person

When someone is in distress, one's thinking is biased to negativity. The role of those close to them is to remind them of what their strength is. Very often, one intends to fight but ends up not, as she can't see what she's capable of doing. Help them see.

We can tell people not to be weak. But even better, is to tell them how strong they are and what their strengths are.
