Making Peace with Death

Sheikh Salman explains an encounter with a child who is asked, “How many people are in your family?” to which the child responds, “Seven. Five are inside, and two are under that tree.” When the man looks at the tree, he sees no one, but two graves. “You mean you are five,” he says, correcting the child. But the child insists, “We are seven.” This child was taught by his father that when he misses those who passed away, he can visit their graves and pray for them. And soon, we will all join them.

A chat with Dr Tickle: Parenting skills

A chat with Dr Tickle yesterday.

When patients came in regarding their child's behavioural issue- e.g rebellious teenage son, anxious teenage daughter, etc, they sometimes wonder:

"I don't know why this one child are behaving this way. I've treated all my children the same".

"That's the problem", Mr Tickle said. "You shouldn't be treating your children equally, but fairly. This means to treat them appropriately. Some children are more anxious than another. Some are more independent. Some need less attention. Some need reassurance. Now, this is where parenting skills come in."

While we think we should be giving more attention and reassurance to the anxious ones, the right way is to manage them is to give considerate reassurance and let their hands go slowly and slowly, i.e to train them be more independent and be able to reassure their own selves.

For example, some parents might reassure a child who are scared of doing his presentation at school by telling him, "it's okay my dear. Let mommy go to school and sit with you tomorrow". But really, what might be better is to say, "It's okay my dear. Mommy will send you to school tomorrow, and then I shall leave you there to do the best presentation that you can give to your friends. I'm sure you'll be fine. You've done your preparation and we shall rehearse that tonight, shall we?".

Every child has their innate personality. The environment-family, friends etc shapes this innate personality.  One type of personality can end up moulded as a plus point or sadly, a minus point. A personality can become a strength or a weakness. Well, just as how there are two sides on the coin, really, there are always two sides of the personality. A flexible person can be a pleasant person to discuss with, but in many occasions, he can be indecisive. On the other spectrum, a decisive person can turn up too rigid or inconsiderate. Again, the ability to express one's personality in different situation needs to be trained. And when is a better time, if not childhood.

Parenting skills is so fundamental. Simple responds to your child have big impacts to his/her personality shaping. Really, you parents are shaping the adults for the society and ummah.

Having said that, I should be grateful of the awesome parents I am blessed with.

Halimunan

Sang halimunan.
dia hilang.
dalam serabut hampa.

Baris sayang rindu Tuhan
dulu dan kini selamanya
sedia terkarang
pada baris kalam.
Sayang seribu sayang.
Sang halimunan jarang.
Jarang fikir dalam.

Dia.
sang halimunan,
lenyap dan hilang,
sunyi dalam keramaian,
sesat dalam sendiri tualang.

Mohon diri,
Jangan lari.
Mohon.
Jangan lupa.
Mohon cari.
Sisi dan segi.
sang halimunan.
mencari kembali.
Atau mungkin.
pertama kali.

Allah.
Pacakkan belon hati pada tiang.
Biar damai melayan angin,
Namun ku tak ingin hilang terbang melayang.
Sebab layang tanpa tali itu menakutkan.
Ada angin dingin,
Ada burung yang bisa mengharung,
Ada ribut
Ada takut.

Islamic Websites

Here are 2 great websites:

1. http://www.virtualmosque.com
2. http://abuaminaelias.com

I enjoyed the nice layouts of the websites and the myriads of important categories covered. The articles are written in very comprehensible way which I believe would be ideal for many, insha Allah. Whether for your own leisure reading material or for sharing materials, Check them out!

Also, the second one (abuaminaelias.com) mentioned clearly the grade and source of each of the Hadith mentioned in their articles . I thought that's a very good thing to have.

And you might want to check this one series named "Names of Allah Series" from VirtualMosque.

Idiopathic

One of the signs of wisdom is to admit you don't know when you do not know. Even in Medicine field, when researches haven't manage to figure out the causes of certain conditions, we'd name it as Idiopathic. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis to name one.

Beautiful transaction

Daripada Abu Hurairah r.a. (Hadis Riwayat Muslim).

So.
When we help someone,
it's not a transaction between us and that someone.
It's actually a transaction between us and Allah.

:)

How cool is that?

Hypervitaminosis

"Acute Hypervitaminosis A:
This occurs after large overdosage the vitamin A. This can occur with unusual dietary intake such as, for example, ingestion of polar bear liver, which has a very high vitamin A content."- patient.co.uk

Ingestion of polar bear liver.

Hambik.
Sapa suruh makan polar bear.

Anyhow, I'm reading on hypervitamosis at the moment. Hyper means excessive.
Hypervitamosis= Too much vitamin

Too much vitamins, although rare, do occur. This is especially related to fat-soluble vitamins i.e Vitamin A, D, E, K. Fat-soluble means they are not excreted and are stored instead. So, if we're giving patients nutrition, these ADEK vitamins levels should be monitored to avoid overdose.

A simple take home message:
Vitamin A and E are best obtained through our diets, rather than through supplements especially in well-nourished society. The supplements can even increase mortality!

On the other hand, vitamin C supplements, as far as researches have shown, is beneficial in the sense that it can reduce the duration of colds.

C for ceasing Hachoooom.
